Xiaoyan Liu

After a long day of office hours and class, many ULV professors simply need to escape. Many play sports, work out or jog; some sing, surf the ‘net; others hang out with their kids and families. Xiaoyan Liu hikes.

Recently getting into hiking “to get some exercise” and to get close to nature, she and her husband have actually moved to greener pastures throughout Southern California for a new experience.

She said they’ve been to Malibu several times, in addition to Mt. Baldy, which she called the highest hike, and Mt. Wilson, which she said was their longest—20 miles round trip.

“I don’t mind walking, although I get a bit sweaty,” she joked, flashing a bright smile, accented by subtle dimples. “When the weather is nice, sometimes we do it every weekend. If the weather is not nice, we cannot do anything about it.”

She likes contra dance and sing-along parties, too. When not hiking or cuttin’ a rug, Liu travels. Venturing somewhere at least every summer, although it is “kind of costing,” she said, she’s recently been to Europe, Australia and this particular weekend, she’ll be heading to Belize.

“I try to go to different places,” she said of her hodge podge of destinations.

But there’s no place like home, as Liu frequently heads to China, where her mother still lives.

“I call her frequently and try to go visit her as much as possible,” Liu said.

THE PROFESSOR

As a The professor of Mathematics, Liu especially enjoys teaching hard-working students, simply because that’s what she was; also, half the battle is showing up.

“I don’t really like students who miss classes, don’t do their homework,” she said.

As a professor, “(Students) think I’m very helpful. I make myself available a lot,” she said. “Students keep telling me I’m helpful.”

And succeeding with Liu is not inevitable; students must earn it: “They also think I’m strict, but I think you have to learn the material to get credit for my class. If you do not learn, you cannot pass my class.”
